ARDUINO DONATIONS 2014: WE ARE OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS!

Zoe Romano – April 30, 2014
donations2014
Once again this year Arduino will make a donation ( for a total of 30,000 USD) to promote open source culture and innovation.
This year, Arduino is also soliciting suggestions: througout 2014, we are asking our community to highlight the 10 organizations which would best benefit from Arduino support.
Arduino is based on the contribution of many other open source projects and wants to support these and other initiatives sharing our approach and philosophy, through yearly donations.
We thought it could be a great idea to involve the community for selecting the projects to support by suggesting us how they could benefit from Arduino donations.
The Arduino community is invited to suggest beneficiaries – associations, foundations, institutions – according to one or more of the following cornerstones:
- it brings innovations in the open electronic and making ecosystem
- it’s an open source project
- it facilitates the exchange of knowledge
- it has an impact on open source ecosystem
- it is a non commercial project
The first call is open during May: anyone can fill this form to send a suggestion based on the cornerstones explained above by the 30th of May. At the end of June we’ll announce 5 finalists receiving a donation of $2000 each.
The second call for submissions will happen during September.
At Maker Faire Rome in October 2014, Arduino will announce the remaining 5 finalists receiving a donation of $2000 each.
The final selection will be at the discretion of the Arduino team.
Moreover, Arduino founders have already chosen their beneficiaries: Creative CommonsFree Software Foundation and Processing.

MAKE YOUR LASERCUT DATAMONSTER WITH INTEL GALILEO

datamonster
Datamonsters are creatures that respond to you. They can see you and respond to your presence and movement. In addition to responding to immediate interactions, they can also be influenced by events happening in the world outside.

HOME AUTOMATION FOR MAKERS GOES ARDUINO AT HEART! SUPPORT THEM ON INDIEGOGO

Zoe Romano – April 28, 2014
ezcontrol
A connected home is in the dreams of many of us and we all spent at least a few moments thinking about how would it be for real. The problem is that most of the hardware devices and software platforms are not designed to work together and that’s why things become complicated.
Today we introduce you to a new Arduino At Heart project called EZcontrol.IT, crowdfunding now on Indiegogo, and designed to simplify the world  of internet of things:
EZcontrol.IT offers dedicated hardware that is affordable and easy to use, compatible and programmable with the Arduino™ IDE and language; designed to interact with a full and extensive software platform: Lelylan, that is an open, easy to use and personalize, cloud platform for Home Automation.

THE MAKING OF TERRORS OF THE BREAKFAST TABLE

Zoe Romano – April 26, 2014
terror
Visual artist and filmmaker Tyler Tekatch worked with Kyle Duffield, interactive programmer to create an interactive video installation called Terrors of the breakfast table, currently on view at the Art Gallery of Hamilton in Ontario, Canada, until May 25 2014:
The visitor approaches a table and chair in the centre of the space, and blows into a sculptural device on the table, when the device glows orange. Subtle technologies sense the viewer’s breath, triggering thought-provoking interactive elements, such as a dream montage, the pace of a scene, the ambient sound, and the brightness of the visuals. The viewer discovers the interactions at their own pace, and some of the effects are more subtle than others.

UPGRADING THE OPENWRT-YUN IMAGE ON THE YÚN

Zoe Romano – April 23, 2014
ArduinoYun_orizz
Today we released the upgraded version of the OpenWrt-Yun image on the Arduino Yún.
This version includes all the latest and greatest from stable OpenWrt, the latest (Python) Bridge (with a php contribution and fixes to the file module), we also added Mailbox support to REST api and other fixes to some open issues.
The new image contains also the fix to the well known Heartbleed bug, a big security issue that impacted on almost all websites of the world.
If you own an Arduino Yún we suggest you to follow the link and read the procedure to update the board.
You’ll need to download the zip file from the download page. Remember that updating the OpenWrt-Yun image will cause the loss of all files and configurations you previously saved on the flash memory of the Yún.
Enjoy!

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN PRIMO PROTOTYPE USING DIGITAL FABRICATION AND ARDUINO BOARDS

Zoe Romano – April 16, 2014
primo doc
Primo‘s team sent us exciting news from their HQ about their contribution to the open source community. After the successful Kickstarter campaign to launch the wooden play-set that uses shapes, colours and spacial awareness to teach programming logic through a tactile, warm and magical learning experience, they took a step further. They released all the documentation and the instructions to produce a Primo prototype,  different from the product that they make and sell.
We just finished the first edition of the Primo play-set open documentation, that includes the design files that we used to make our first prototype and a step-by-step guide to make your own version of the Primo play set. This “maker” version of our product can be assembled using rapid prototyping techniques and common tools like Arduino boards. Read the rest of this entry »

THE MOST ADVANCED LAMP/SPEAKER IS OPEN SOURCE AND ALSO ARDUINO AT HEART

Zoe Romano – April 15, 2014
cromatica digital habits
Interacting with objects in a new way has always been the main focus of Digital Habits, a design studio based in Milan.  Today we are proud to announce they’ve become a partner  of the Arduino At Heart program with their new project called Cromatica (it was exhibited at the coveted Fuorisalone Milan Design Week in the Superstudio Temporary Museum for New Design and started thecrowdfunding campaign just some days ago!).
Cromatica is half speaker and half desk lamp: it can be controlled through a natural gestural interface, touch sensors or remotely via the Cromatica Android and iOS app. Designed to deliver both light and sound functions, Cromatica features wireless 4.0 Bluetooth connection for streaming music and a RGB lamp for multiple ambient effects. Read the rest of this entry »

THANKS FOR MAKING OUR BIRTHDAY SO GREAT! #ARDUINOD14

Zoe Romano – April 14, 2014
ArduinoD14
It’s been a couple of weeks since we celebrated with all of you the beginning of our tenth year. We’ve been receiving videos and pictures and want to share them in this post (Explore the tagboard of #ArduinoD14).
The first Arduino Day around the World was a huge success largely due to the dedication of each of the communities joining the party! We had more than 240 community events sharing with us this moment of celebration and we sincerely appreciate the efforts and thank you again for the support within the Arduino Open Source Community! Read the rest of this entry »
