GARDENBOT IS MONITORING YOUR GARDEN

Davide Gomba – October 21st, 2010

Very interesting bottom-up product (but it’s not really a product, it’s more of an experience of nature-lovers and DIYers) do look after your garden:
GardenBot is a garden monitoring system. This means that you put sensors in your garden, and GardenBot will show you charts of the conditions in your garden — so you can see the world the way your plants see it.

HACKVISION NOW AVAILABLE

Davide Gomba – October 20th, 2010
As I read in the Forum, the latest NootropicDesign Product has bees released:
Hackvision is a simple, retro gaming platform based on Arduino technology that you can assemble and connect to your TV. You can write you own games and make your own controllers!
The price goes from $37.95 (kit) to $47.95 (assembled).

FEATURES

  • NO Arduino is required. Based on Arduino technology so you can write your own games and upload them using the Arduino IDE. All you need is a USB to TTL serial cable or adapter.
  • Connects directly to your TV with standard RCA connections. One for audio, one for video. Works with NTSC or PAL (Europe, Africa, Asia, South America) TVs.
  • Integrated button controller right on the PCB.
  • Preloaded with awesome Space Invaders and Pong games. More games coming. You can write them, too!
  • Other controllers supported: Wii nunchuk, SuperNES, or paddle controllers you can make from a potentiometer and button. Or invent your own.

ARDUINO AL LINUX DAY

Davide Gomba – October 20th, 2010

A sabato!
Hai un talk su Arduino al Linux Day? Commenta e ti mettiamo nel post!

ARDUINO MEGA BASED KEYGLOVEARDUINO MEGA BASED KEYGLOVEARDUINO MEGA BASED KEYGLOVE

Davide Gomba – October 19th, 2010

The Keyglove is a portable Arduino-powered glove that uses touch combinations to generate keyboard and mouse control codes using only one hand. Once learned, the glove can easily be used without looking, making it perfect for embedded/wearable environments. The glove is thin and light, built to allow other activities (such as writing or driving) without being in the way.
nice MEGA-based project. Have a look at the similar devices page to have a nice compairason of similar project online with different hardware solutions.

BAD DAY FOR OPEN SOURCE IN SPAIN, OR NOT!

dcuartielles – October 18th, 2010
Today I got to know about two different unfortunate events for open source culture happening in Spain at more or less the same time. First the cancellation of the Open Source World Conference to happen in Malaga on October 28th. According to some sources, the economical situation forced the main organizers to suspend in the last minute. However, and here the good news, the National Federation of Free Software Companies (Federación Nacional de Empresas de Software Libre – ASOLIF) has decided to carry on with their part within the event and to keep it alive despite the problems. The organizers have gathered those interested in the conference around an email list that registered over 2.000 messages in the 5 days they have known about the cancellation. If you want to follow what is going on, subscribe to the email list and be part of the buzz.
On the other hand, my hometown -Zaragoza, Spain- is about to host theHackmeeting 2010, codename Gozahack, what translates into “Enjoy Hacking” or “Enjoy the Hack”. The list of activities proposed for this event can be seen here. I really like the nodes dealing with intellectual property issues, and with open hardware. The Qi-Hardware people are going to host one of the talks, and promises to be quite interesting. These meetings are a yearly event that usually takes place at a Squatted Social Center. Squatting is not legal in most of the EU, Spain is not an exception. Today, October 18th 2010, just three days before the event starts, the police broke into the social center where Gozahack was going to take place. Unfortunate? Sure it is, but not the end of the world. Again, the organizers have decided to go on. They aren’t really sure yet how they will make it but they will host the event. Three days of hacking, politics and love for making things: follow this website to check how the story unfolds.
Might seem like a bad day for Open Source in Spain, but the commitment shown by the open source/free software community, is a proof that it is not. What is not killing you, makes you stronger, as we say in Spanish.

ROLLING OUT MORE CHANGES ON THE WEB

dcuartielles – October 16th, 2010
During the incoming days we are going to introduce some more changes to our web. There will be no service interruptions while we modify our blog, to allow users post their own projects -via a moderator-, or when we introduce some small modifications to the Playground’s CSS. However, you should expect some small issues when we implement two main improvements that we are testing these days:
- a forum migration to a new system
- a unified user registration and login service over the whole site
These changes are part of our Fall’10 improvement plan, where we are trying to get an infrastructure that will allow us giving privileges to the users and become forum moderators, blog editors, etc. Also the unified login system should allow you purchasing goods on the forthcoming Arduino Store.
There still no sure date for these operations to happen, but it should be in thefollowing 2 weeks, I like to roll out changes on Saturday night, when the US goes to bed and the EU isn’t awake yet. Anyway this time we might be forced to introduce the changes during weekdays … we’ll see how the schedule develops.

ARDUINO @ MOZILLA DRUMBEAT FESTIVAL 3 – 5 NOVEMBER 2010ARDUINO @ MOZILLA DRUMBEAT FESTIVAL 3 – 5 NOVEMBER 2010ARDUINO @ MOZILLA DRUMBEAT FESTIVAL 3 – 5 NOVEMBER 2010

Arduino is honoured to participate the upcoming Drumbeat Festival organized by Mozilla from the 3rd to the 5th of November 2010 in Barcelona, Spain. We are going to manage the Arduino Tent in the Hackerspace, along side withMonochrom (from Wien, with their HackBus standing in the public square) and Sean Bonner.
We are bringing our latest tools for Education, showing off simple learning exercices for teachers and students. Arduino standalone projects as well as simple connections to Processing and PureData.
We’d love to meet the Community and have a drink together wednesday 3rd of November in the early evening (if you come at 20:30 you’ll have the chance to follow the Opening Keynote by Joi Ito). Bring your stuff to show off for the Science Faire 21:00 – 23:00. We’ll have some more time to chat and share projects during the foolowing days (more about this soon).
Stay tuned on DrumBeat Program Wiki to be updated on our activities. Massimo is going to talk on Thursday the 4th at the Festival. If you can’t make it you’ll still have the chance to hear him speak at Disseny Hub Barcelona the day after (Friday the 5th).
See you in Barcelona!

ARDUINO SHIELD LISTARDUINO SHIELD LISTARDUINO SHIELD LIST

Davide Gomba – October 14th, 2010

[Arduino Shield List] published an updated list of ALL Arduino shields. From theEthernet Shield (this links to the new one with Micro SD support, Mega compatible) to the more exotic ones.
Sick of trying to figure out which pins are used by some obscure Arduinoshield? Can’t tell whether two shields will be compatible with each other?
This shield database arose out of a discussion on the Arduino Forums about the need for a comprehensive online reference for shield pin assignments. It lists as many Arduino shields as I can find along with their pin usage, making it easy for you to determine if particular shields are compatible.
Once again, a community effort makes our life easier. Bookmarked. ThanksJonathan.

COMPLUBOT, WON THE BERGAMO SOCCER CUP

dcuartielles – October 13th, 2010

The Spanish Robot team Complubot, integrating kids up to 17 years old, who are controlling their 2,5kg and 1,5kg robots with distributed intelligence based in Arduino Software and Hardware, were present at the Robot Soccer competition that took place in Bergamo (IT) last weekend. Massimo and I visited the competition and had a chat with Nerea and Ivan, the Spanish team members, as well as with Eduardo, the coach. At some point we will blog more about their story, for now, just take a look at their video where they beat team after team on the way to the finals, where they won agains the German team TNT. It became an Arduino Distributed vs. BlackFin Centralized Intelligence competition.

HACKED TOY INTERNET ALERT CIRCUIT

Davide Gomba – October 12th, 2010

Roth Mobot shared a nice project about an “interface between the Internet and a common circuit bent toy.
We decided to create a circuit that would activate a toy whenever someone logged into Roth Mobot’s web site. We designed a simple and elegant solution using an Arduino, a home made Vactrol, a common electronic toy, and three simple scripts written in different programming languages. We’d like to thank William Swyter for lending us his Arduino, and Factory Smoke for his Vactrol suggestion, which stopped us from creating overly-complicated custom circuitry with transistors and diodes, and made the programming a piece of cake. The result was an elegant circuit that electrically insulates the toy from the Arduino (and the computer) by “optically coupling” them with light.
