TRANSLATING AS COMMUNITY WORK
June 1st, 2010

Nice community experience among arduino-spaniards and told by David Cuartielles here:
This week, I am doing some serious community volunteering in the production of the Arduino Reference in Spanish. In the early days of the Arduino project, back in 2006 and thanks to the work of mostly 3 people, we translated the Arduino page back then into Spanish. The system, thanks to the contribution of hundreds of users around the globe, evolved in an almost infinite series of iterations, into what it is today.

DIGITAL CAMERA CONTROL USING ARDUINO USB HOST SHIELD
June 1st, 2010
–
nice (and deep) intro to Arduino driving Cameras via USB.
I’m starting new series of articles describing exciting field of digital camera control. In modern cameras, USB port can be used not only for transferring images to a PC, but also for sending control commands to the camera. It is often possible to send commands which “press” the shutter button, modify shutter and aperture values, some cameras are even capable of doing focus control. At the same time, new shooting techniques, such as HDR and stacked focus, require that a photographer makes several shots, slightly modifying one or several shooting parameters from shot to shot. Even age-old time lapse technique could use some automation. Since camera manufacturers are, as always slow to implement there cool features, Arduino comes to the rescue.

HACKATON: TRANSLATE THE WEB IN 1 WEEKHACKATON: TRADUCE LA WEB EN 1 SEMANA

During this week (May31st – June 4th) we are translating the Arduino web to Spanish. Participants from all over are contributing to make this possible. We are channeling all our communication via the Spanish email list (es [at] arduino.cc). If you want to help out, join the email list and we will tell you how.
You can follow the process by clicking this link. We have 413 documents to translate. Some of them are orphans, which means we had them in previous versions of the site, but are no longer used. We will have a second outcome from this process: which pages should be left out from the server. We started 3 hours ago, and we have accomplished 5% of the total already. However, there is still a lot to do.
We are learning by doing, some of the contributors are not just translating pages, but suggesting a style guide on the fly. If this experiment works fine, I think we will have set up a way for doing things in community.
I expect having a translation ready by Friday. Then we will jump into the evaluation phase, when we will have to analyze how good was our work.

This week Arduino has been featured on La Repubblica‘s online version. For those of you not familiar to it, La Repubblica is a fairly large Italian newspaper (the largest according to some sources). The article is not super big, but let’s put it this way: WE ARE ON LA REPUBBLICA. If you read Italian or if you enjoy messing around with some funky online translation services, you should take a look at:
Esta semana Arduino ha salido publicado en un artículo en La Repubblica.it, la versión en línea del rotativo italiano del mismo nombre (según las fuentes es el mayor periódico de Italia). La historia no está mal … aunque viéndolo de otro modo: ESTAMOS EN LA REPUBBLICA. Si quieres leer sobre el proyecto en italiano o si te apetece usa alguno de esos divertidísimos sistemas de traducción en línea, sólo tienes que mirar acá:
BEHINDUINO GREAT FOR BREADBOARD ARDUINO PROTOTYPING
May 27th, 2010
– Over at MAKE: Japan, Takumi Funada found this nifty project that squeezes an Atmega168 onto the back side of a half breadboard, leaving the entire front available for connections. Looks like it could be handy, as long as you don’t forget that there is a circuit connected back there! I’d like to see one of these made with a transparent breadboard!

SABINEGRUFFAT ARDUINO-VIDEO-SYNTH
May 26th, 2010
– I programmed an ATMega chip with Arduino to create my first 8-bit video synthesizer. The video signals are generated the same way as the audio files so what you see is what you hear.I used the shell of an old CRT computer monitor as a case. It is flipped upside down and attached to some used office chair wheels. The synthesizer is controlled by arcade game buttons and a pacman joystick. This synthesizer generates sine waves at various frequencies and amplitudes. I imagine doing more of these video synthesizers to create different patterns.

5-VOLT USB BREAKOUT BOARD
May 25th, 2010
– I actually made this back in February (you can see the date etched next to my initials on the board), and never got around to posting about it. It’s a super simple breakout footprint for a USB mini type-B port. I wanted to make a really simple way to power my breadboard, and since my computer is usually on my work table, this seemed like a great idea. I made about 60 of these tiny boards which measure about 2cm x 3cm and hope to sell them as a really cheap, tiny kit one day.

CIID OFFERS 3 WEEKS OF SUMMER CAMP FOR INTERACTION DESIGNERS
May 25th, 2010
–
if you happen to be in Western Europe this summer:
The CIID summer school is a series of back-to-back workshops where participants will become engaged with the topic of interaction design, learning practical skills in the process. We hope to infuse the knowledge and enthusiasm to encourage participants to use their new-found skills in their current practice or studies.Running between 12-30th July, there are 25 places available on each module and while we would encourage people to participate in the full three weeks, participants have the option to take one, two or all three weeks of the programme. We are interested in receiving applications from a diverse range of backgrounds from all over the world.

FLASH, ARDUINO & PARALLAX PING
May 24th, 2010
– [Gabor] reports about a simple project with this video to follow. (low down the volume before pressing “play”)
initially i have planned to realize the art project i was writing in my previous post about, in C++ Open Frameworks. Since I had some trouble though getting the range finder data into OF i have settled for Flash which worked out straight away using a flash’s binary socket and a custom written java proxy server byJames Alliban. There are still some performance issues i believe that need to be fixed as well as sudden jumps in range values, which i still need pin point down. Anyways…here’s the result.
You may wonder why using OF or Flash and not, simply, Processing. I do as well. That is why the whole project caught my attention.
